The challenge is on...Schwartzel birdies the opener and is tied for the lead. Food for thought for Mickelson.
And talk about steady....Rose and Donald inspiring each other on with a pair of pars each.
More on Rory and his club abuse! On the 11th McIlroy bends his club and ends with a grubby 8 on his card. That takes him to +13 and +5 for the day.
Ladies and gentlemen....the octopus troosers are on the way...
Stricker having a bloomin' nightmare on the second...more news on the way
Looks as though it's getting a little breezy out there at Merion. Donald chips out cleverly from a steep bank and he settles for a bogey. As does Rose....inspiring each other? Dragging each other down more like....back to Stricker
And this will not make good reading for Steve Stricker fans. After a steady par on the first he cards a triple bogey. He's back on +3. And ooofff - Mickelson's in the sand on the second
Not a good day so far for Poults. Bogey on the first, three pars but then wallop - a triple bogey and he's on +9.
Wohhhhh Mickelson scoops the ball out of the bunker and it waves at the pin and trickles a few feet past the flag. Brilliant. He'll settle for that.
And there's an Aussie on the hunt. Jason Day grabs a birdie on the fourth after three pars to move onto +1.
A brilliant bunker shot but a stinky putt and Mickelson has to be content with a par on the second.
Interesting. Donald has his right shoe off, his sock off and he's off for a paddle in the water next to the green. Ball pops up and comes down into the sand. That's a shocker. He towels his leg and has plenty to reflect on...you feel there are plenty more shocks and pitfalls awaiting all these boys.
It's all over for Tiger Woods who finishes with a 74 and +13. Five bogeys and three birdies. Ugly.
That's two successive bogeys for Donald but better English news for Justin Rose who birdies the fourth and gets back on to +1.
Yep Donald hit a spectator on the third. His day has got a little cloudy.
Player of the day?....it belongs to Jason Dufner. Five birdies in the first 13 holes and he's gone from +8 to +3 in a couple of hours.
Attention all Mickelson fans. Worrying times after your man struggles with the putter and a horrible green as he double bogeys the par three third and he's on +1. So it's official. No player is under par. Loving the Marion course? No prisoners....
Another player implosion and it's Charl Schwartzel. He started with a bogey on one but a par and two bogeys have seen him drop. He's back on +1.
Hunter Mahan the only player on level par. He's had three pars so far. No fireworks required to win this event today - just no mistakes. Better news for Mickelson - he smacks his ball to within 40 feet of the pin at the par five fourth. Magical.
A scrappy and lively round for Westwood - three birdies and three bogeys. While Donald it's down, down and down. Lovely shoes Luke but your golf's awful so far sir. Three bogeys on the bounce and he's on +4.
Mickelson has an eagle putt.....and it slips away to the left. But a simple tap in and that's a shot back for Leftie. Back on level par.
High-flying Dufner is wobbling on the 15th while Mickelson's ball has gone for a swim.
Looking good for Justin Rose and he birdies the sixth thanks to a belting putt from 90 feet. Up to 1+.
Another birdie putt goes begging for Westwood (6+) and it's a double bogey for Donald. After two pars, his card reads: bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey. +6.
Oooohhh. Big groans from the gallery as Mickelson cards his second double bogey. The only winner today so far? Monty says it's "Merion"
Five straight pars for Mahan. Keep those bogeys off your card and you'll win this thing.
Nightmare rumbles on for Schwartzel. Started with a birdie and it's three bogeys in a row. +2 and he looks jaded.
