Jack Wilshere was the first England player to react to the news on twitter. he said "Shocked about news on Fabio Capello...gutted to be honest, gave me my 1st cap and believed in me! Thank you Mr Capello! #GreatManager."
- The Arsenal midfielder said Capello had had a "massive" impact on his career.
He tweeted: "People have there own judgement on Capello but for a young player who was given the chance to play for my country at such a young age... He has shown great belief and trust in me so I can only thank him....massive influence on my career so far! Sad to see him go!" - Former England defender Danny Mills criticised the FA for their handling of the situation and claimed the Euro 2012 campaign will be compromised as a result. "It think the FA have handled this very badly," he told Radio Five Live.
- What a day for Harry.Starts it in the dock and ends it surely within touching distance of landing the England job. Quite incredible.by hirstclass via twitter 2/8/2012 8:20:41 PM
- Mills added: "I presume Harry Redknapp is the favourite, but he's got a job to do with Spurs until the end of the season," he said. "If it's going to be Harry Redknapp are Spurs going to allow it? The FA are almost going to be held to ransom. The Euros is going to be a trial for whoever takes charge."

Scotland manager Craig Levein said: "It might be very difficult for a manager to stay at his club and devote the time that's needed to do the England manager's job. I don't know what the FA will decide is best way forward."
- Former FA chief executive David Davies claimed Spurs boss Harry Redknapp would find the England job too tempting to turn down and Tottenham would be reluctant to stand in his way.
- "Given the bizarre coincidence of the two events that came together today (Capello's resignation and Redknapp's acquittal) the odds have to be that Harry Redknapp will be the next manager of the England team," Davies said.
- Davies added: "I think there are one or two other strong candidates, but there is a momentum now behind Harry Redknapp that the FA will find hard to resist. My instinct is that someone like Harry Redknapp ultimately will not want to turn down the job of England manager and my instinct is that Tottenham Hotspur ultimately will not want to stand in his way."
- Former England captain Gary Lineker backed Redknapp for the top job, claiming he could manage both England and Spurs in the short term.
- He tweeted: "As you ask I think new man should be English. Players have to be, so should boss. HR the man if he wants it. He can do both jobs til May."

- QPR midfielder Joey Barton was typically forthright in his assessment of where tonight's developments, which followed John Terry being stripped of the captaincy, left the England team.
- "Well, well, well, this debacle claims yet another victim. Where does this stop. #madness," Barton said on Twitter @Joey7Barton: "No captain and no manager. 4 months from a major championship. What's going on......."

- Who will the FA pick to replace Capello? Let's have a look at some of the contenders ...
- Capello resigns as Eng boss. An Italian abandoning a sinking ship? Who would have thought it.by mhawk_79 via twitter 2/8/2012 8:41:28 PM

Arsene Wenger ... Hugely respected in England and his knowledge of the domestic game clearly an advantage. In the middle of a vast rebuilding exercise at Arsenal, where some fans have turned against him, so not impossible to believe he could be prised away. Never shown any liking for the international game though.

Jose Mourinho .. Impeccable CV and perfect grasp of English. One man who would have no problem controlling the dressing-room egos. Tipped to leave Real Madrid in the summer, his fiery temperament might be a big problem for the FA, in addition to his salary demands, which are sure to be high.

Stuart Pearce ... Long-time coach of the England Under-21 side and confirmed as boss of the Olympic team later this year. Pearce's fierce reputation as a player took a knock when he failed to curb the excesses of Joey Barton at Manchester City. Lacks experience of the club scene but many other countries prefer to appoint from within.

Alan Pardew ... After difficult spells at Charlton and Southampton, Pardew has re-established his reputation at Newcastle. Overcome a lot of scepticism to re-establish the Magpies as a top-flight force and not yet out of contention for a Champions League place after an outstanding campaign.

Roy Hodgson ... Was strongly fancied to replace Capello following the 2010 World Cup. However, before the FA made their decision, Hodgson plumped for an ill-fated spell with Liverpool. Now at West Brom, Hodgson has vast managerial experience and would be viewed as a safe pair of hands.
- Capello's win rate was better than any other manager that has taken over England... So no, its not good that he's left..by JRileyyy via twitter 2/8/2012 8:44:41 PM

And the hot favourite, Harry Redknapp ... Ticks all the boxes; English, managed in the Champions League, won trophies, plays attractive football and has done so with Tottenham thanks to a core of English players, including captaincy candidate Scott Parker. Has to be the overwhelming favourite.

- Stuart Pearce, manager of England Under-21s and the Great Britain Olympic team, is expected to be put in charge for the Holland friendly.
- Former Arsenal and England striker Alan Smith, now a pundit with Sky Sports, said: "We knew he wasn't happy with the John Terry situation and made his reasons perfectly clear, but I didn't expect him to resign. I don't know if the FA have forced his hand and said 'we can't go on this way, we can't see any future in it', but given he's put in a lot of work to get us qualified and there's a big championship coming up which England have a chance of doing well in, I am surprised."
- FA head of elite development Gareth Southgate confirmed that Redknapp is one of the "leading candidates".
- Southgate said: "Stuart Pearce is in the building and with the Under-21s. But you have to think for the summer - can you get the person you want for the longer term? Because the leading candidates are with clubs at the minute. Harry Redknapp is one of leading candidates but Tottenham will have something to say about that and (Tottenham chairman) Daniel Levy is not going to want Harry to leave without a fight, so there's an awful lot to work out in the next few weeks."
- Piers Morgan has been sharing his views via Twitter: @piersmorgan: If Harry does to England what he's done to Spurs - we could do surprisingly well this summer. Players will love him.
- Morgan adds: Harry to England, Bale to Barca, Modric to Madrid, Spurs back to mid-table mediocrity. Happy days eh @Lord_Sugar !
- Spurs boss Redknapp is already 10/11 with one betting firm to take over from Capello
