Clarke has gone nuts about that decision to come off
Absolutely ludicrous decision to come off.
The floodlights are on. Australia wanted to bat on
Sorry folks - this is all a bit daft.
Absolutely farcical stuff here. They've come off because the umpires were concerned about safety - they asked Cook to bowl spin and he wouldn't
The covers are now coming on. It's raining
I am afraid folks it is proper raining now.
And it's filled in so I suspect that will be it for that day. With Australia in the lead by 331 runs but no declaration - although one suspects they will overnight if we get no more play
Play has officially abandoned for the day. Sorry folks. Join me tomorrow
Close of play summary
32 overs were lost at the end of the day due to bad light and then rain with Australia in the lead by 311 runs. Earlier in the day England had been dismissed for 368 with cameos of 30 and 32 by Prior and Broad.
Australia changed their batting order to move David Warner to open with Chris Rogers. He was dismissed just before lunch caught behind off Broad. Warner played an aggressive innings scoring 41 off 57 balls before hooking one of Bresnan's deliveries straight down Joe Root's throat at deep square leg. Khawaja made an unremarkable 24 before he was bowled round his legs by Swann.
England slowed the over rate right down to take time out of the game as Australia moved towards their probable declaration target of a 350 run lead. At 4.30, the umpires deemed the light was too bad to continue unless spin was going to be bowled, Cook refused to do that and the players left the pitch. Half an hour later the rain came and play was abandoned just after half 5 with Australia leading by 331 runs.
Good morning from Old Trafford.
10.38am weather update - it's been hosing down all morning but it's dry at the moment and the covers are on and they are mopping up. Radar shows there's a lot more rain on the way though sadly
11.00 We will start at 11.30 if there is no more rain.
Australia have declared overnight
We've had some arrows of desire and we're got Cook and Root and some Aussies
Oooooh - it's not going to be easy batting out there. Harris starts with a maiden
Starc takes the new ball from t'other end - 3 slips and a gully for Root
The ground is about 1/5th full. I can't say I blame those who haven't turned up
blimey - Cook given out LBW off Harris. Cook reviews it so anything could happen. But seriously Cookie mate - that's plumb
Cook averaging just over 24 in this series
There are a lot of Aussies in the ground and they are loving this
England won't be chasing these runs so it is all a matter of whether Australia can get 10 wickets in between the rain.
It's a long shot
The sun is breaking out. I shall never listen to a weather forecast ever again.
There was a mad rush out of the Manchester Weatherspoons when it was announced that play would start at 11.30. No one was expecting that
Batting doesn't look very easy. Trott has just got a thick inside edge.
Ryan Harris is bowling beautifully
Eng 10/1 after 6
Really good start by Harris and Starc, Unnervingly I find myself half hoping that Australia get these other 9 wickets
Ryan Harris is such a good bowler - what a career he could have had if he hadn't have been so injury prone
Well that's just a bit village. England didn't get to the ground until about 30 mins before play because they were told not to come to the ground.
Root is off the mark off the 26th ball he's faced
