Second ball swings into Cook's pads and he flicks it away. It runs down the slope to the Tavern stand for 4. Pattinson just pulls it legside again allowing Cook to flick behind square on the leg side for 2. The slope really is tricky for bowlers who aren't used to it.
Over 2 England 6* Cook 6* Root 0*
It is Ryan Harris who takes the new ball from the Pavilion End. Harris is a very good fast bowler but has had his injury problems.
He bowls his first ball back of a length outside the off stump and it's left alone. The 4th ball is very wide of the off stump. No need for Root to play at any of them
Over 3 England 12/0 Cook 12* Root 0*

Root plays the 3rd ball very late and with soft hands, he edges well to down 3rd man. The 5th ball flies past the outside edge of Root's bat but comfortably misses. There's a sloppy misfield from the final ball allowing Root to take 2.
Over 5 England 26/1 Root 6* Trott 8*
Change of bowling already - it is Shane Watson who comes on and it's an inspired change as he gets Alastair Cook LBW off the second ball - caught on the knee roll in front of middle stump. Trott gets off the mark off the first ball he faces with a 4 flicked off his pads through square leg. He follows it up with another boundary - this one is a thick outside edge.
Over 6 England 28/3 Trott 8* Bell 0*
It is Harris who continues, he hasn't got his line right yet. Too wide. But this time he goes full and straight and hits Root on the pads. Huge appeal and he is given out by Erasmus. Root reviews it. A lot of time is spent checking for an inside edge. It has hit pad and bat but hard to tell which one first. It is determined that it was pad first and it would hit the stumps
England are in early trouble here.
Pietersen plays his first ball solidly for 2 but then nicks a length ball behind to Haddin. England in all sorts of trouble.

Over 15 England 43/3 Trott 17* Bell 6*
Watson to Trott who leaves the first ball but it swings back in and only just misses off stump. Maybe dangerous or maybe Trott knows exactly where his off stump is. He leaves the rest of the over alone. A good maiden from Watson
Over 16 England 44/3 Trott 18* Bell 10*
