Over 7 Australia 23/3 Rogers 9* Smith 1*
Broad is having treatment in the dressing room Sky tell us and because it was an external blow that occurred on field, he can bowl straightaway when he comes back on.
That is about the best bowling you will ever see - an absolutely magnficent delivery from Jimmy that gets Clarke caught behind for 0. Australia in disarray.
They scramble a single again off the 4th ball but it's all over the place. Frenetic stuff
Stat attack: Anderson has now gone past Fred Trueman with his 308th Test wicket.
Over 8 Australia 24/3 Rogers 9* Smith 2*
Not entirely sure why they've sent Smith out instead of Phil Hughes. Smith is an unorthodox batsmen and by that I mean lacking in any sort of technique but he's gritty.
Smith takes a single from the first ball of the over with a fairly ugly shot. Finn again bowls a good over - pitching it up. Rogers plays out the rest of the over
Over 9 Australia 25/3 Rogers 9* Smith 3*
Just a single to Smith from that over. Anderson bowling with good pace - around 88mph. Still no Broad. At some point these two are going to need a rest.
Chris Rogers is exactly the right man here, this is where experience comes into play. He has a massive job on his hands here.
Over 10 Australia 31/3 Rogers 9* Smith 9*
Smith scrambles 2 runs through square. Finn is bowling very straight to Smith but there's a field set for bowling just outside off - the 4th stump line. The final ball is pulled away nicely by Smith through square for 4 and there's no one out there.
Over 11 Australia 35/3 Rogers 13* Smith 9*
There's a good inswinger from Anderson on the second ball that just misses bat and stumps.
Rogers edges the 5th ball from Anderson but it goes wide of 3rd slip to the 3rd man boundary for 4. Anderson getting nice swing.
Over 12 Australia 39/3 Rogers 13* Smith 13*
Finn's first ball is nicked by Smith past Matt Prior for 4 - Finn has his hands on his head.
3rd ball is peach and gets Smith playing right down the wrong line - it goes past the outside edge.
Broad watch: still no Broad.
Over 13 Australia 41-3 Rogers 14* Smith 13*
It's just quietened down a touch as Rogers and Smith are trying hard to dig in. Anderson tiring a little.
Over 14 Australia 51-3 Rogers 14* Smith 23*
Fine bit of fielding from Trott to save a boundary from Smith. They get 2 from it. Then Smith pulls away for 4 from a ball just short of a length- it was a bit agricultural but they all count.
And then he does it again. Still not very pretty but he times it well for another boundary on the legside
Over 15 Australia 53-4 Smith 23* Hughes 1*
Atherton says that Smith has an "idiosyncratic" technique. Well that's one word for it yes.
Anderson continues - Rogers clips through the legside for 2. Anderson and Finn are having to bowl more than Cook would have liked because of Broad and they are visibly wearying a bit.
But then Anderson angles one to Rogers who is struck on the pads and given LBW - he reviews but it is clipping legstump and stays with on-field call.
Over 16 Australia 61/4 Smith 29* Hughes 2*
Swann into the attack and there are 4 catchers in place for Hughes. He clips the 3rd ball into the leg side for a single. Smith leaves the next one that is wide of off-stump. Then negotiates the rest of the over - Smith is battling hard here.
Over 17 Australia 65-4 Smith 30* Hughes 5*
Anderson is having to continue - Hughes flicks the 3rd ball for a single. The 5th ball is a decent length but pushed by Smith for a single and then the final balls is worked into the off side for 2 runs. It comes to something when Australia are relying on Steve Smith for runs.
Over 18 Australia 66-4 Hughes 5* Smith 31*
Swann getting a lot of revs per minute. Smith chips up the 4th ball but it is just wide of Cook at short cover and they pick up a single.
Men all round the bat for Hughes who plays the 5th ball down into the offside. He then whips the final ball off the outside edge into the legside but it is well fielded by sub Ben Foakes.
Over 19 Australia 69/4 Smith 33* Hughes 6*
The over rate today has been terrible. Yes there's been a lot of wickets but it's still awful. Smith gets a single from the second ball of the over, rocks back and finds a gap in the offside field.
Smith pushes another one into the off side 5th ball and scrambles a single. There's a bit of a theme developing but he's moved on to 33 and has gone better than any of his teammates.
Over 20 Australia 73/4 Smith 37* Hughes 6*
A low full toss from Swann is driven sweetly to the cover boundary by Steve Smith. Next ball is driven straight back to Swann. The partnership moves to 20.
Over 21 Australia 75-4 Smith 38* Hughes 7*
And that seems to be stumps - that's 8 overs short for the day
Smith clips Anderson offside for a single from the 3rd ball. then Hughes follows with another clip for a single from the 4th ball. These two have ticked things along. It's not beautiful but it's working. Hughes pads up to the final ball - they appeal but it's given not out.
Thank you for your company. We will be back here tomorrow morning at 10.30am to bring you all the action from day 2. What a day it's been today. Thanks for all your comments
Stuart Broad has been passed fit to bowl
Players and umpires are out and we resume with the 22nd over of Australia's innings.
Over 22 Australia 78/4 Smith 41* Hughes 7*
It's Steven Finn who bowls the first over of the day from the Pavilion end. He starts with a leg-side loosener. It's very sunny at Trent Bridge so batting should be easier today and there will, you would think, be fewer nerves.
Smith gets a thick inside edge off the fifth ball but it misses stumps and goes safely into the legside. He pulls the final ball away but it's not timed well, he pushes hard between the stumps and gets 3 for it
Over 23 Australia 78/4 Smith 41* Hughes 7*
It's Anderson to bowl from the Radcliffe Road end. This is the end he likes. Steve Smith plays out the over with a series of solid defensive shots. There's not a lot of early swing and indeed there might not be all day. This pitch will get flatter
Over 24 Australia 88/4 Hughes 8* Smith 42*
First ball comes off Hughes pad past Matt Prior for 4 leg byes. Then runs a thick inside edge down towards long leg for a single. Smith gets a hurried single from the 4th ball and then Hughes edges past Prior but it actually hasn't hit either glove or bat and is given as a leg bye.
Over 25 Australia 93/4 Smith 43* Hughes 12*
Single taken from the first ball of Anderson's over. Smith and Hughes are just playing very sensibly, taking the singles where they can but happy to play defensively. Then Hughes cuts away a wide ball from Anderson for 4 - up on to his back foot, stands tall and cuts away expertly.
Good over for Australia, Smith and Hughes not looking rattled at all
